Skrein -‘The Eat Up’

Label: Dented Records
Release date – July 2, 2007
Format: CD Album
Web: www.myspace.com/skrein
Witty north London rude boy, MC Skeirn, is set to take grab the UK hip hop scene by storm. The summer release of his forthcoming album, ‘The Eat Up’ is a collaborative project featuring some of the UK’s finest hip hop artists. With an impressive line-up from Foreign Beggar to Plan B and a mix-up production by Dag Nabbitt, turntable master DJ IQ and new boy Kelakovski, grime plopping, in-your-face spitting and toxic break beats are meticulously combined. The heavy lyrical flow set against drops of jazzy vibes and blade sharp scratches in songs like ‘Bastard’, featuring Dubbledge, encapsulate Skeirn’s playful sound. Cheeky as hell, the MC’s rapping deals with women behaving like cunts, the pressure of being one of the ‘blaaad’ boyz and biggin’ up his own spitting talent. Sarcastic rhymes and piss-taking is Skeirn’s game. Incorporating a classic blend of hip hop, this tooth-grinding, raw, eclectic MC brings a fresh individual style to liven up the scene.

Black Daniel -‘Hard Times On The Way’

Label: Pieces of Eight Records
Release date – July 9, 2007
Format: CD Album
Web: www.myspace.com/blackdanielspace
Fresh from the London and New York underground club scene, brothers L and L May have joined forces with NYC top club promoter, Craig Louis Higgins Jr to create an infectious pop/electro, indie first album. Titled ‘Hard Times On The Way’ the Black Daniel trio have mixed their DJ skills to produce 13 catchy tracks embedded in deep issues. Executed light-heartedly by the accompaniment of repetitive electro-beats, heavy bass line flows, with buoyant rhythms of la la laaaas in songs like ‘Gimme What You Got’ (pull the trigger) make you want to jump off your chair and jerk your head around. Their infusion of electro-house beats to the rock reverberations ‘Children Caned Unable’ and ‘Information’ is what makes these guys completely different from their indie counterparts. After a recent European tour with Kasabian, Daniel Black’s future should be all but what their album ‘Hard Times On The Way’ suggests.
Abdominal -‘Escape from the Pigeon Hole ’

Label: Antidote Records
Release date – June 4, 2007
Format: CD Album
Web: www.myspace.com/mcabdominal

Hardcore pedal pushing rap is what this feel good record is all about. Canadian MC, Abdominal’s twisted lyrics spun under funk and jazzy grooves cycle through your mind at a mad rate. Rapping to hyperventilate is the Abdominal motto, confessed in ‘Breathe Later’ and ‘Abdominal Workout’. Sticking to old school rhymes which are funny, clever and positively addictive, ‘Escape from the Pigeon Hole’ is true to the form of the D.A.I.S.Y era. Less about the mundane bling and more conscientious intrigues, this is one album you know you want to heavily blast out and share with the rest of the world.

Calvin Harris - ‘Vegas’

Label: Fly Eye
Release date – Out Now
Format: Limited edition 10”
Web: www.calvinharris.tv
More ridiculously infectious electro pop from Scottish musician/producer Calvin Harris. With an album out in the summer, and an arena tour supporting Faithless, 2007 looks set to be huge for this young man. This is the second double A-side single to be released on his own Fly Eye imprint and both ‘Vegas’ and ‘Merry Making At My Place’, again prove this man’s talent for upbeat synthy disco and witty observations, placing him firmly in the year’s ‘most exciting artists’ category.

The Mighty Roars - Sellotape

Label: One Little Indian
Release Date: April 16, 2007
Format: CD Album
www.themightyroars.com

The Mighty Roars debut release is one of the most hotly anticipated of 2007, and thankfully ‘Swine and Cockerel’ does not dissapoint. Twelve tracks of spiky punk rock, that grab you by the throat and shake you about like a rag doll. Big, loud and in-your-face, bands like this often struggle to translate the chaotic electricity of their live shows on to their records, but Lara Granquist’s desperate panting vocals and the super-charged guitars and riotous drums are all there. It is relentless, never letting up for a moment, the musical equivilant of a smack in the mouth. The Mighty Roars are one of those rare treats; a band who are actually worthy of the hype.

Robyn - Robyn

Label: Konichiwa Records
Release Date: April 2, 2007
Format: CD Album
www.robyn.com

Scandinavian pop sensation Robyn has come of age – or at least that’s what her Management will have you believe. A mega star in her native Sweden, she released her debut at the tender age of 13, under the tutelage of pop’s Midas, Max Martin. Cut to today and we find a very different Robyn. Disillusioned with the lack of artistic control afforded by a major record deal, Robyn bought her way out of her recording contract and started her own label, Konichiwa Records. Robyn’ is the first album released on her new label; bristling with an almost overblown sense of empowerment and emancipation; it epitomizes contemporary pop music, straddling genres and incorporating styles and influences from across the musical spectrum. It is spiky and sinister in parts, yet never strays too far from its pop sensibilities.

The enlistment of Klas Åhlund, the brains behind Stockholm’s electro pop stalwarts, Teddybears STHLM, and Karin and Olof Deijer aka The Knife, brings with it enough electronic edge and kudos to ensure the ‘it’ crowd are happy, without ever alienating the Radio 1 listeners. It is an unabashed exercise in all things ‘now’ and ‘cool,’ which unfortunately is also its undoing. At times it smacks of someone trying a little too hard, lacking that sense of effortlessness that one often associates with Scandinavian pop. That is not to say there are not any good tracks on there. The metallic 8-bit beats of ‘Konichiwa Bitches,’ - which comes off like a lost Nenah Cherry track - and the inspired cover of Teddybears’ ‘Cobrastyle,’ will no doubt get some heavyweight remix treatment in the coming months, as will the Furtado-esque synth-pop thumper ‘Handle Me.’

On the whole ‘Robyn’ is hit and miss, however whilst by no means an essential addition to your record collection, I defy anyone not to find at least a few tracks they like on there.
The Violets - Foreo

Label: Angular Recording Corp
Release Date: February 12, 2007
Format: Single
www.theviolets.co.uk

The Violets are the newest art-rock offering from uber-cool New Cross (London) label, Angular Recording Corp. New single Foreo is a driving post-punk affair with a massive dose self-aware pretentiousness thrown in for good measure. It is too early to tell exactly where this band is going, but on the strength of this single, it could be upwards.

The Hussys - Tiger E.P

Label: Music First
Release Date: February 19, 2007
Format: EP
www.myspace.com/thehussys

No one could accuse The Hussys of pushing the musical envelope. Their pleasantly infectious pop rock isn’t the most daring sound out there, but what they do, they do well. Beautifully crafted 3-minute pop gems, with catchy melodies that lodge themselves in your brain, it will not be to everyone’s taste – and to be honest, the four tracks here are a little twee. The Hussy’s are one of those bands that look set to become everyone’s guilty pleasure; they won’t rock your socks off, but they will probably darn them for you, while you sit by the fire and drink Horlicks.

Matt & Kim - Matt & Kim

Label: iheartcomix
Release Date: Out Now
Format: CD Album
www.mattandkimmusic.com

Brooklyn’s Matt & Kim are without a doubt, the most fun band we have come across in a long time – you need to see their videos to get the full effect of the hyper synth power pop, this boyfriend/girlfriend duo make. Forget the Mates of States comparisons everyone levels at them, because thankfully this band are not located firmly up their own backsides. Fun is the order of the day; a mindset with which they clearly approached their debut album ‘Matt & Kim’. It is pretty simple stuff, but that is not to say it is bad; rather, all indie posturing and introspection has been left at the door and in its place, are 11 tracks of propulsive, freak-out quirkiness, designed to throw you around the dance floor.
Little Barrie - Stand Your Ground

Label: Pias / Wall of Sound
Release Date: Out Now
Format: CD Album
www.littlebarrie.com

Facing the type of adversity which would have undoubtedly seen the demise of a lesser band; the loss of Little Barrie’s drummer – Wayne Fullwood - in the past year has had quite the reverse effect on the bluesy/soul/rock three piece. Seemingly, it has instilled the band with a determination which has resulted in the creation of one of 2007’s first must-have albums. Little Barrie’s sophomore offering, ‘Stand Your Ground’ is a remarkable example of triumph over adversity, which saw the band recruiting some heavyweight help in the process. Much of the album was produced in New York under the watchful eye of genius beat maker Dan ‘The Automator’ Nakamura, with Russell Simms of the ‘Blues Explosion’ taking drumming duties during stateside recording sessions. These two inspired hook-ups have given Little Barrie a far more streamlined sound. Fans of the band’s debut album ‘We are Little Barrie’ need not fear; the original template is still intact - funky as hell with the same bruised soulful vocals - and the influences are still clear. There has simply been a subtle shift from the overtly retro lo-fi filtered sound of the first album, in favour of a crisper more rounded sound. Gun for hire, Barrie Cadogen’s virtuoso freelance fretwork for Primal Scream and Morrissey has clearly not gone to waste; ensuring a pleasantly surprising evolution in a band that could have easily become a one trick pony. Soul for the 21st century.

The Sounds - Dying to Say This to You

Label:
Korova
Release Date:
March 19, 2007
Format: CD Album
www.the-sounds.com

No country other than Sweden could produce a band like the Sounds. Their new wave power pop is camper than a row of tents, yet manages never to end up in that smarmy wink-wink, nudge-nudge, Scissor Sisters territory. This is in no small part thanks to Maja Ivarsson, the silver-maned banshee of a lead singer whose earnest vocals ensure a balance – if at times a little shaky - to the band’s penchant for the ‘synth-tastic.’

The Sounds’ new album ‘Dying to Say This to You’ is eleven tracks of upbeat synth-pop goodness, which in the hands of lesser mortals – non Swedes - would probably die on its arse, but then you realise that special ingredient…conviction. They mean every word and every note of it. It is a big lightening bolt of rock and roll, shot from Thor’s hammer and you either get on board or fuck off, because they don’t really give a shit. It is music to get drunk to and sing from the roof of a bus shelter. The nearest thing this stuff has to cerebral connotation is the number of brain cells you will destroy getting drunk and listening to it. Expect to see them on pub jukeboxes in the very near future. Marvellous.

Scratch Perverts - Watch the Ride

Label: Harmless Records
Release Date:
March 5, 2007
Format: CD Album
www.harmlessrecordings.co.uk

The Scratch Perverts have been responsible for numerous mix albums over the years most of which have been outstanding. Unfortunately, ‘Watch the Ride’, does not fall into this category, definitely being one of the weaker offerings in recent memory.

Whilst the assorted tracks display the type of eclecticism we have come to expect from the Scratch Perverts, there is little to suggest much thought went into the record beyond this. As a mix, it is fairly pedestrian; lacking both ambition and cohesion, with a few sporadic stabs and flares here and there, it does not make for a particularly impressive mix, especially when you consider the collective skills on offer here, and the quality of past mix projects. On the whole, you can’t help but feel a little cheated.

‘Watch the Ride’ is by no means the best mix you will hear from the Scratch Perverts. Their mixes for the Badmeaningood and the Fabric series both spring to mind as far more worthy illustrations of the undeniable skills of these world-class turntablists.
Roll Deep - Rules and Regulations

Label: Roll Deep Recordings
Release Date:
March 26, 2007
Format: CD Album
www.myspace.com/rolldeepofficial

After the commercial failure of their first album – which subsequently led to the East End grime crew’s departure from Relentless records – Roll Deep return with the hugely ambitious and accomplished, ‘Rules and Regulations’, which sees the boys go back to the drawing board to create what is undoubtedly the most important grime record of the past two years.

Perhaps most encouraging is that this is only the first of two commercial releases from Roll Deep this year. The crew’s time in the studio has clearly been well spent as the tracks presented here represent only a fraction of the material the crew have amassed, all of which looks to be a vast improvement on their debut, ‘In at the Deep End’.

With many dismissing grime as stagnant and over hyped, it is encouraging to see there are still those who are willing to push and experiment with the genre. With production from the likes of Wiley, Target and Danny Weed and lyrical duties falling to Flowdan, Scratchy, Whiley and Skepta amongst others, this album showcases some of the best talent the UK has on offer right now. Standout tracks include ‘Badman’, ‘Babylon Burner’ and ‘Stampers’, but it is the quality and consistency of this album as a whole, which is most impressive.

People beware, Roll Deep are back and they have just set an entirely new standard for British urban music in 2007.
