NOISE FROM UNDERGROUND - event info

Carhartt & PIMP Magazine have joined forces to bring you a live showcase of some of the most exciting musicians hailing from east London. Noise from Underground – which doubles up as a Christmas party – is hosted at East End club, 93 Feet East on December 15, with acclaimed London bands A Human, the Bleeps and Brown Sauce pouring in to sing their tales of London life with additional DJ sets by George Demure, Mat Anthony and special guests.

Much-lauded headliners A Human (Wall of Sound) are a 3-piece electro, blues & rock outfit who are “about to do for music what Rod Hull has done for cable TV.” Their sound evokes an image and atmosphere of London that is in equal parts funny, awkward and surreal. Each song – accompanied by visuals – tells a bizarre story that is brought to life through their energetic live performance. The band, who are currently working on their debut album, will be joined at 93 Feet East by Otter Recordings’ latest signing, The Bleeps – a two-piece hip hop/garage rock/electro band, who are generating widespread hysteria throughout London. The Bleeps’ live gigs are becoming the stuff of legend with frontman and guitarist Remy and drummer, Paul producing so much beat metal noise between them, you’d think there were ten of them.

Expect more London narrative from punk/soul duo, Brown Sauce, a band who formed last year through “a shared love of English fanfare and crumpets.” Vocalist/guitarist Laverne and drummer, Sammi mix dark punk-pop with acid blues to produce a sound which sits somewhere between “A male Janis Joplin” and “an essentially English White Stripes.” Their onstage energy personifies raw, underground British music and has secured them a monthly residency at the Pleasure Unit in Bethnal Green plus a recent tour in New York. Tirk Records’ new signing George Demure, whose LP ‘Boomtown Medallion’ is soon to be released, will be dropping by to spin one of his infamous DJ sets. Mr Demure was first discovered by Trevor Jackson’s Output Recordings in 2005 and as a producer, has recently remixed the likes of Spektrum and Freddie Mercury. Also providing a unique blend of musical styles is Mat Anthony from Optimus who has remixed artists such as Minimal Compact, Playgroup and Kylie. This gig will be rammed, get there early to avoid disappointment.

PIMP: Tell us brief (true) tale about you which features east London somewhere in the story.

Brown Sauce: I once saw a man dressed as Kermit the Frog in Whitechapel which inspired me to buy a delightful adult chicken outfit. I may wear it at the gig if it’s cold.
A Human: We met Vanessa Feltz outside The Crown Tavern in Clerkenwell. The band met in that pub as well. We have the photo to prove it. She had her head in a sculpture and it was playing Pink Floyd. She said it was shit…the sculpture that is. Not Pink Floyd, she’s too cool not to like Pink Floyd.
The Bleeps: We played at Hackney Empire on the main stage. Halfway through the show, a member of ‘The Medals for Alcohol’ performance featurette laid an egg on said stage. It was not meant to be funny, it was not meant to be anything but a performance featurette. Now we share the same brief story about east London as so many other people who saw the gig.

Who is the best musician to have emerged from east London?

Brown Sauce: Chas and Dave or Steve Marriott
A Human: Bud Flanagan
The Bleeps:
Best? I’m never sure. Possibly Brian Harvey/Tony Mortimer.
George Demure: Jah Wobble

Someone asks you for your autograph. You say, ‘What message do you want’? They reply, ‘It’s up to you’. What do you write?

Brown Sauce: Avez vous le sex pour moi. Regards.
A Human: I’m glad you like our music. Don’t ever look me in the eye again.
The Bleeps: ‘It’s up to you. Love The Bleeps.’
George Demure: Yours sincerely, Frank Sinatra

What’s the worst thing about east London?

Brown Sauce: Cockney rednecks that still idolise the Krays and all those other gangster melons.
A Human: Tramps. They can really spoil a middle class bohemian’s day out. And flip-flops.

East London is known for its Cockney rhyming slang. Can you invent a piece of slang now?

Brown Sauce: The little bugger threw a conker at me so I kicked him up the Jodie. (Marsh / Arse). A Human: Thora Hird (Turd).

What’s the strangest thing that’s happened to you while living in east London?

Brown Sauce: I met a happy bus driver the other day. Whoa.
A Human: I met someone who wasn’t in a band.
The Bleeps: I think it would be waking up in the model steam train outside Stratford tube after a particularly ferocious practice with Parker.
George Demure: Alien abduction.

Worst east Londoner to have ever lived?

Brown Sauce: Those charming Krays. Always looked after their muvva though didn’t they? Wankers.
A Human: Nasty Nick Cotton.

Which issue should be of most concern to Londoners at present?

Brown Sauce: The amount of Toni and Guy hairdressers popping up. Nu wave monsters that must be stopped.
A Human: Neu Rave and terrorism. Maybe not terrorism as much.
The Bleeps: Hair cuts.

What can the audience expect from you at the 93 Feet East gig?

Brown Sauce: Funny shoes, trousers and some good songs. Bit of swearing.
A Human: Shingles.
The Bleeps: They should expect it to go loud then quiet then loud again.
George Demure: Energy, enthusiasm, eclectic taste.

What’s at the top of your Christmas list?

Brown Sauce: Dear Santa, where’s last year’s Gucci time machine, you heartless sod? Send me to Disneyland.
A Human: The title and the date.
The Bleeps: Distribution or maybe a deal …hhhmmm.
