| 'YOUR
MOM’S FAVOURITE DJ' (Ninja
Tune)
If
one consults the ‘How-To-Make-Music’
textbook and recites the Album chapter subsection
‘How Many Tracks Does An Album Have?’,
one may not be surprised to find it explicitly
saying more than two, but it seems this publication
hasn’t reached Kid Koala (I always knew
the publishers didn’t market the textbook
right) over in Vancouver as his new album ‘Your
Mom’s Favourite DJ’ features just
two compilation building blocks.
But
don’t let this blatant disregard for formulaic
album planning throw you as the 3rd outing from
the ‘DJ with a difference’ provides
further insight into the minds of one of the finest
turntable tyrants on the circuit. Having done
more gigs and tours than you could shake a Harlem
Globetrotter at, he also finds time to write comical
accounts of unemployed robots and draw elaborate
sketch books to accompany his filmic samples and
vaudeville piano.
One
would struggle to find a more original compiler
of album length songs with examples including
a short piece on Mogwai of Gremlins fame giving
us a rendition of what turntabling would sound
like had the pre-evil ball of fluff had the opportunity,
and it sounds pretty good. With an epic amount
of audio, one may find themselves paying more
attention to asking your mates what film it originated
from, and in places it dampens the elaborate layers
Koala has put together.
But
as I dictate to my scribe the issues surrounding
the distribution of ‘How-To-Make-Music’,
Kid Koalas intricate scratching accompanied by
his sourced reflections featuring everyone’s
favourite fatman Ricky Gervais provide pertinent
reminders that ruining records isn’t bad,
and following formula is, so keep creating.
